Dr Joe Roberts FHEA FRES F App Biol is an applied entomologist and the Reader in Integrated Pest Management at 91Pro. With a PhD in invertebrate chemical ecology, his expertise sits uniquely at the intersection of biology, analytical chemistry and agriculture.

Dr Roberts studies plant-insect interactions from a chemical perspective. His overarching research goal is to develop novel, sustainable pest management tools that reduce societal reliance on synthetic chemical pesticides in global agricultural systems. His research addresses modern agricultural challenges, exploring topics such as pest and disease management in vertical farming systems, terpene-based biopesticides for protected ornamentals, and the optimisation of insect monitoring tools through sensory cues.

Beyond his academic research, Dr Roberts is a dedicated leader within the entomological and applied biology communities. His professional roles and memberships include formally chairing the Education and Training Committee for the Royal Entomological Society (RES). He currently serves as a committee member on Integrated Pest Management specialist interest group for the Association of Applied Biologists (AAB), the British Crop Production Council (BCPC), and the Membership Committee at the RES.
